Letter from Robert Townsend about the Foundation
Why start a foundation? That’s a question many people want to know, but then if you want to come to know the real Robert Townsend my mission has always been about change and motivating the dreamer to soar. I was once just a dreamer with just a dream looking for a way. I found the way with the luck of a credit card and became a Hollywood Icon. Though I have produced, directed various films it’s not enough I want more. A lot of people would say the media is not responsible for any of the problems of the world – violence, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, you name it, but I would disagree. I know that images are powerful. They can make you feel happy or sad. They can push you toward hope or despair. With that being said I have committed my life to countering the images of negativity. A reporter once called me “the feel good director” and “the quiet giant”. My vision is to change the world for the better planting positive seeds one image at a time to harvest a field of change. So with the Robert Townsend foundation I will nurture, develop and train the future voices of change allowing them to learn from my mistakes teaching them my unique methods of creating and hopefully ultimately inspiring them to soar. Though I continue to work in Hollywood and create content in success, the foundation would fund new content, and create a new distribution model that would not get caught in the revolving doors of the studios where everything looks alike and reality shows and watching human train wrecks are the way of the world. The Foundation will create a new model to showcase the new filmmakers to the world.
